Sauk Prairie Community Read Press Release:

A Sauk Prairie Community Read is planned for the book, “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You” by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, which will be followed by community conversations. The book, which is a remix of the original National Book Award-winning “Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America,” is recommended for ages 13 and up. It is “a timely, crucial, and empowering exploration of racism- and antiracism- in America. This is NOT a history book. This is not a book about the here and now. It is a book to help us better understand why we are where we are. A book about race.”

Through a joint effort of the Sauk County Extension office, the Sauk Prairie Optimist Club and Optimist International, the Sauk Prairie Area Chamber of Commerce, the Ruth Culver Community Library, and the George Culver Community Library, books will be available for free at both libraries beginning Monday, October 18.

Readers are invited to take part in a community movement to read, learn, think, talk about, and lead social transformation. People who pick up the free copies are encouraged to pass on the book to others and encourage them to participate in the book discussions or return them to either library. Community book discussions will occur in early December.

The Sauk Prairie Community Book Read is a project of the Sauk Prairie Social Justice and Equity Initiative. The Sauk Prairie Optimist Club, following the lead of its parent organization, Optimist International, decided to work to make Sauk Prairie a more welcoming and equitable place and to level the playing field for all residents of the community. A small group began to engage in conversations with various community members to seek their input and experience with obstacles and barriers in our community.  Data was gathered.  Mission, Vision, and Goal statements were developed. Put simply, the goal of the Initiative is “Respect for All.” For more up-to-date information, please find us on Facebook at Sauk Prairie Social Justice and Equity Initiative  https://www.facebook.com/groups/375420960730662
