River Architects Selected For Library Project
About the Architect
In 2004, River Architects, a La Crosse firm, was selected to help the library plan its future space. Val Schute, the founding partner of the firm, will be the architect working on the project. Favoring a collaborative approach, Schute cites community involvement as key to a successful library project.
Site Selection
Selecting a site for future library space was the first task at hand. A committee of community members has been working with the Library Board and the architect to evaluate potential sites. Locations have been explored throughout the community including sites downtown, within the growth corridor and in central locations between the two villages.
Library Growth
Library use, resources and services have all increased since the library moved into into current facility in 1997.
The number of items checked out has grown dramatically from 67,284 in 1996 to 122,309 in 2004. Our collection has also experienced growth to meet the needs of the community. The number of books alone has increased from 22,216 to 37,343 during that same period.
Additional space is needed to meet the community's needs both today and in the future.
The Vision
Future library space will provide a warm, inviting and friendly atmosphere. This increased space will provide for separation of quiet work spaces (for reading and computer use) from spaces for more social activities (such as storytimes, programs, and conversation).
Features such as a separate storytime room, a computer lab and small study rooms would ideally be included in an expanded facility.
