Electronic Resource Acceptable Use Agreement

By using a public workstation or accessing the library's wireless network you agree to abide by the following:

All users of electronic information resources such as the Internet are expected to use these resources in a responsible manner, consistent with the educational and informational purposes for which they are provided and to follow these rules and regulations.

Responsible, ethical use of such resources includes the following:

*Using resources for educational, informational and recreational purposes only: not for unauthorized, illegal or unethical purposes.

*Respecting the privacy of others by not misrepresenting oneself as another user; by not attempting to modify or gain access to files, passwords, or data belonging to others; by not seeking unauthorized access to any computer system, or damaging or altering software components of any network or database.

*Further respecting the privacy of others using workstations at Prairie du Sac Public Library by not interfering with their use.

*Making only authorized copies of copyrighted or licensed software or data.

*Individuals using library equipment agree not to make any changes to the setup or configuration of the software or hardware.

*Not sending, receiving, or displaying, text or graphics which may reasonably be construed as obscene.

*Not exposing children to harmful materials. Sec. 948.11 of the Wisconsin Statutes, among other things, makes it a crime to expose children to pictures or images of nudity, sexually explicit conduct, or physical torture or brutality that appeal to the prurient, shameful or morbid interests of children, are patently offensive to prevailing adult standards regarding materials suitable for children, or lack serious literary, artistic, political, scientific or educational value for children.  Viewing content of this nature is prohibited at the library and violations will result in the loss of internet privileges for the follow terms: 1st infraction-l week; 2nd infraction-1 month; 3rd infraction-1 year.  The 1 year suspension may be appealed at the next regular meeting of the Library Board; however, the suspension will remain in effect until the appeal can be considered.

These restrictions also apply in email and chat room environments accessed through library computers.  Misuse or abuse of Library equipment or Internet access will result in suspension of privileges.

Additional Terms:

*Library staff may be available to assist you in your use of electronic resources, but may not be familiar with every application that you might wish to use.  Due to scheduling constraints, there many not be an Internet trained Librarian on duty at all times.

*Computers in the Children's Area are for use by children and young teens through age 15, their parents and care providers.

*The Prairie du Sac Public Library assumes no responsibility for the use of the Internet by minors.  It is not possible for library staff to control specific information children and youth may locate on the Internet. Just as libraries do not vouch for or endorse the viewpoints of written material in their collections, they do not do so for electronic information. Selection policies which serve to govern a library's purchase of written materials may not apply to material accessed electronically. It is the responsibility of the user (or the parent, guardian or caregiver) to determine what is appropriate.

*Due to insurance limitations and warranties, Library staff is not allowed to configure patron laptop computers or other devices or to install any devices or software onto patron equipment.  Further, library staff is not able to provide technical assistance for computer configuration or other technical support issues.  If assistance is required, patrons should contact their equipment manufacturer or vendor.

*The Library's wireless network is not secure and the Library cannot guarantee the safety of traffic across its wireless network.  Anti-virus, security and privacy protection is the responsibility of the user.

*The Library cannot guarantee that computer access or wireless service will be available at any specific time or that the connection will have any specific quality or speed.  Furthermore, there is no guarantee that a patron will be able to make a wireless connection with his/her device.

*The Library assumes no responsibility for any alterations or interference with a patron's equipment, configuration, operation or data files resulting from connection to the wireless network or use of library equipment.

*The Library assumes no responsibility for damage, theft, loss of any kind to property brought into or used at the Library.
